Five prototype endotracheal intubation boxes have been created in Northern Health to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
The boxes will be used for training, simulation, and potentially as a backup option for personal protective equipment (PPE) if needed, according to the Improvement team at the University Hospital of Northern BC.
The box works by sitting over the head and shoulders of a patient as they are intubated by a provider.
It acts as a protective shield between the patient and medical staff, minimizing the medical staff’s exposure to COVID 19.
They were created in collaboration with the Northern Health Biomed team, the Director of Physician Quality and PG Plastics.
“We are doing our best to be fit to fight back with tools that will protect our staff and healthcare workers. We are so pleased that Spirit of the North was willing to provide funding for these units,” said UNHBC Dr. M. Jamil Akhtar.
The intubation box was originally devised by Dr. Hsien Yung Lan in Taiwan.
Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation has set up a COVID19-#safeathome Fund for those who want to contribute to the current area of greatest need.
