With the warm sunny weather on the horizon this weekend, the risk of an avalanche at several national parks increases.
Avalanche Canada has issued a warning for Yoho, Kootenay and Jasper National Parks as well as the Northern Rockies region.
Spokesperson, Karl Klassen has a few tips to stay safe. “Avoid large open slopes, terrain traps such as gulleys or depressions in low ground where snow from even a small avalanche can pile up much deeper.”
Backcountry users without experience or training in avalanche safety and terrain recognition should avoid the backcountry this weekend.
The main issue is a deeply buried weak layer which has recently produced natural or large human triggered avalanches.
