SD 57 announced today (Thursday) they will make a decision on April 28 whether to keep or change the Kelly Road Secondary name.
This comes as a result of the Board approving a motion February 25 to engage in the renaming process from Kelly Road to Shas-Ti Secondary.
In the meantime, the board has set dates for public engagement sessions for April 1, 5, and 6 (Hart community, location TBA) and April 15 at the House of Ancestors.
“We acknowledge that we did not give adequate notice to the Kelly Road community that this was coming forward, saying that, it’s a balancing act because you don’t want to put tons of time and energy into designing a process that may not be approved at the Board table,” explained Board Chair Tim Bennett.
“The community wants a decision made, they don’t want the process to drag on.”
Information will be formally collected through both the engagement sessions and a questionnaire.
“I think what we need to remember is that when we are talking about schools, we often are talking about hubs and communities and we know that these are deeply connected to people’s identities,” said Superintendant Anita Richardson.
She added it was a learning opportunity for the Board.
“Anytime we are approaching ideas around discussing that you are going to have a response from the community, I am actually quite proud of our students in how they have responded and how they have chosen to share their voice throughout this process,” she said.
