Council endorses resolution to share damages with local governments from opioid lawsuit

Prince George City Council heard an update from the Union of BC Municipalities Resolutions Committee and Province regarding resolutions put forward by the city last year.

Council also endorsed the “Sharing Payments from Opioid Class Action Lawsuit” resolution to be advanced to the North Central Local Government Association (NCLGA) 2020 Convention for consideration.

Under the Opioid Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act, the provincial government may sue a manufacturer of an opioid product to recover costs of health care, on behalf of a population that has suffered damages caused by opioids.

The resolution suggests that UBCM request the provincial government to share any damages from the lawsuit with local governments.

“The province has signed on to a class-action lawsuit to try and recover some of the costs from the opioid crisis, and what we are trying to do as a local government, is see if we can get a piece of the pie so we can use that to offset some of our costs,” said Councillor Brian Skakun.

Additionally, Councillor Cori Ramsay was nominated to the NCLGA Board of Directors for the position of 1st Vice President.
