UPDATE: Classses cancelled for Monday following Giscome derailment (drone footage)

A CN train derailment (Thursday) close to Giscome Elementary caused the school to evacuate.

No injuries were reported but officials are warning locals to stay away from the area.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has deployed a team of investigators to gather information and assess the occurrence.

CN Rail has provided an updated statement as of 7 a.m. today (Friday):

CN crews are responding to a derailment involving approximately 27 railcars carrying various commodities in Giscome, BC (near Prince George). There is no danger to public safety and there are no fires or injuries at the site. A small amount of Petroleum Coke, a non-hazardous by-product of the refining process, has spilt into an adjacent creek. CN environmental experts, as well as regulatory authorities, have been deployed to oversee the physical removal of the product from the creek.

The cause of the incident under investigation.

CN thanks first responders for their assistance and apologizes for the inconvenience caused by this incident.

Friday, 2:55 P.M.

School District 57 has announced that classes will be cancelled for Giscome Elementary on Monday, with students being re-routed to Blackburn Elementary.

Students will be picked up and dropped off at their regular times. Giscome students beyond the road closure will not be expected to attend classes.

Prince George Secondary School students who live beyond the road closure will not be expected to attend classes.
