UPDATE: Giscome students rerouted to Blackburn as result of derailment

Due to the closure of Upper Fraser Road as the result of a train derailment this morning (Thursday), Giscome Elementary School will be closed tomorrow (Friday).

Staff and students from Giscome Elementary will be re-routed to Blackburn Elementary, according to SD57 Spokesperson Jason Peters.

Buses will pick up students at their regular times and transport them to Blackburn Elementary, but students who live beyond the road closure will not be picked up or expected to attend school.

Students who attend Prince George Secondary and live beyond the road closure will not be transported by bus to and from school, and not expected to attend classes.

A CN train derailment this morning close to Giscome Elementary School caused an evacuation, however, no injuries are reported.

One powerline is down and residents are being warned to stay away from the area, one witness told MyPGNow.

“It’s right at the crossing, right up the road, right at Giscome Elementary School,” said Jennifer Goold.

“The cars have actually come separated, some of the cars are on their sides down the line. At the intersection, you can see where they all started compressing  against one another.”

Goold also confirmed crews are on scene and the cause of the derailment is still unknown,

“We really lucked out on this one!”

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is deploying a team of investigators to a train derailment near Giscome, British Columbia. The TSB will gather information and assess the occurrence.

SD57 Superintendant Anita Richardson noted an update for students and families will be provided by the end of the day.

CN Rail has issued the following statement on the derailment:

CN crews are responding to a derailment involving approximately 20 railcars in Giscome, BC (near Prince George). There is no danger to public safety as there are no fires, injuries or leaks of product.

We will update you as more information becomes available. The cause of the incident under investigation.

 CN apologizes for the inconvenience caused by this incident.

A CN Rail train derailment this morning (Thursday) near Giscome Elementary School caused an evacuation.

According to SD57, students were transported by staff to their designated evacuation site at Willow River Church.

SD57 Spokesperson Jason Peters confirmed parents are being notified of the Evacuation zone by the district and will be able to pick up their children either at the church or have them transported to Blackburn Elementary School for the rest of the day.
