The UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team crushed the UBC Okanagan Heat 85-64 in Kelowna to sweep the doubleheader and clinch second place in the Canada West Explorer Division. After an 0-4 start to the season, the UNBC men finished with a 12-8 record. The Timberwolves will get a first round bye and will see their first playoff action on the road the February 27th weekend.

–The UNBC women’s basketball team ended up 2-18 after closing its season with a 65-49 loss to UBCO.

–The Prince George Cougars scored three early first period goals in a 1:27 span, two of them by Zach Pochiro,
in a 4-2 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers. First star Ty Edmonds stopped 41 of 43 shots. It was just the 2nd win in the last 17 games for the Cougars who play tonight in Red Deer. Prince George is just a point behind Vancouver and two back of third place Kamloops in the race for the 3rd and final playoff spot in the BC Division. Kamloops beat Seattle 3-2 in a shootout while Vancouver lost 6-0 to Everett.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings had their four game win streak come to an end as they were blanked 3-0 by the Cowichan Valley Capitals. The Spruce Kings play again on the Island tonight in Victoria.

–The BCMML leading Cariboo Cougars face off tonight and Sunday on the Lower Mainland against the Vancouver North West Giants in a match-up of the top two teams in the BCMML.

–BC champion Patti Knezevic of PG will begin the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts today in Moose Jaw
with her first game against Saskatchewan.

–With the spectacular opening ceremonies complete, attention turns to the competition at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George. Action begins today in five of the 19 sports: Ringette, Women’s Hockey, Long Track Speed Skating, Alpine Skiing and Free-style Skiing.
