SD57 to assemble group addressing Kelly Road name concerns

School District 57 is looking to blend the “extended history of Shas Ti with the more recent history of Kelly Road Secondary School” through the formation of a new group, according to an official release.

The committee is dubbed the Engagement Process Working Group.

Last week’s announcement of a new name was met by an outpouring of concern, culminating in a protest outside of the SD 57 building.

The proposed new name is Shas Ti Secondary, a Dakelh expression that means grizzly path or trail.

SD57 says that reconciliation, as defined by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, will remain a central focus for the Engagement Process Working Group.

The group will represent, and be selected by, various community members and will include:

  • 2 Kelly Road Secondary (KRSS) Students
  • KRSS Teacher Representative
  • KRSS Support Staff Representative
  • KRSS Principal or Vice Principal
  • Lheidli T’enneh Councillor
  • Lheidli T’enneh Elder
  • SD57 Trustee Representative
  • SD57 Superintendent
  • KRSS Parent Advisory Council Representative
  • Hart Community Association Representative
  • KRSS Alumni Representative

SD57 has published a series of questions and answers addressing some of the concerns, such as cost, engagement, and the rationale for the renaming.
