Northern Health Integrated Housing & Health proposal to see fourth reading at Council

A proposal for an integrated health and affordable housing building is going on to the next phase, after being given the go-ahead at Prince George City Council last night (Monday).

Northern Health would oversee the project, while BC housing would be in charge of design, and PG Council would provide land for development and lead the rezoning process.

The building would be the first of its kind in the region, located at 855 first avenue.

It would be studio housing with supports provided on-site.

Council held a public hearing to gather feedback from residents in the area, and several individuals voiced their concerns about the location, calling it ‘isolating’.

Nonetheless, The city decided to move forward with the project and the motion was granted a fourth reading.

“No location is going to be perfect,” said Councillor Cori Ramsay.

“This facility is within 500 meters of two other shelters, it’s within 900 meters of St. Vincent De Paul, it’s very close to the user groups that will be using the facility.”

Phase one of the project would see 50 affordable housing units for people experiencing homeless, and if successful, phase two would add an additional 50 rental units for low to moderate-income families.
