Despite wet weather, Ice Oval ready for Winter Games

Despite how mild our winter has been, the Canada Winter Games are fully prepared to hold skating events in the city.

That from Phil Beaulieu, Director of Sport and Venues for the Winter Games, who says the ice oval is a venue that can “Turn around quickly”, especially with where current temperatures are at.

“We’ll be making some really good ice,” he says. “During the games, we can just race earlier, or later, and stay away from the high between 2:00 in the afternoon and 4:00 in the afternoon.”

“As long as its dropping down to -5 to -10 at night, we can make really good ice, because the hot water we put on melts and we get a really thick cohesive layer,” he says.

Beaulieu calls that a perfect foundation to start, “With the rain, our lines all floated out, a little bit, but they’ve repaired those lines and have started building ice on top,” he says.
