“It’s a no-brainer”: Safe, Clean, Inclusive Downtown Committee gets name change

Prince George City Council voted unanimously to change the name of the Select Committee on a Safe, Clean and Inclusive Downtown to cover Prince George in its entirety.

The committee will now be known as the Select Committee on a Safe, Clean and Inclusive Community after a public consultation on the matter back in December.

“I felt very, very strongly about it during the inaugural meeting, I was really grateful to hear the idea come from other people,” noted Councillor Susan Scott.

“The issues we are talking about exist in every neighbourhood of this city.”

That doesn’t mean the focus will be pulled away from Downtown completely, but the name will better reflect the goals of the committee.

Scott said the name change will validate concerns from other neighbourhoods.

“Unfortunately,  addictions don’t discriminate.”

The rest of the council felt the same way.

“It’s a no-brainer to me, this is an issue that spreads through our entire community,” said Councillor Kyle Sampson.

He explained it affects those who frequent that area of  Prince George as well, and now that they have the committee details ironed out, it’s time to get to work.

“It sounds procedural to have it come back to council, but I think it is important that the committee as a whole, that we’ve appointed to this, agreed on that decision.”

This comes after the committee was formed earlier in December to help combat property crime in Downtown PG.
