Record attendance at Natural Resources Forum

Organizers are calling this year’s BC Natural Resources Forum in Prince George, a success.

The forum, which saw 1185 attendees this year, heard from First Nations leaders, Provincial and Civic politicians, and resource developers.

“We were just at around 1100 (attendees) last year, so about 100 more individuals. About a 10 percent increase,”  explained Sarah Weber, President CEO of C3 Alliance Corp.

It’s held every year to provide an update on the resource sector in the province and a networking opportunity for those who work in forestry, mining, and energy.

The 2020 theme was ‘Strengthening BC’s Competitive Advantage’ in the resources sector.

“The biggest takeaway I think was the ongoing conversation about UNDRIP (UN Declaration for Rights of Indigenous Peoples), a foundational piece of legislation.”

“We listened carefully to quite a number of First Nations leaders on the need to consult and engage at the outset of a project, taking advantage and learning about traditional knowledge, and building meaningful partnerships.”

Weber explained a good partnership reflects the need of everyone involved.

“I think what touched people the most, the biggest story I heard was the Wet’suwet’en leaders who came and spoke, spoke from the heart about their desires for their community.”

The forum included a tradeshow, 8 keynote speakers including Premier John Horgan, several workshops, discussion panels, and networking opportunities.

Next year’s forum plans are on the drawing board already according to Weber.

“We are already starting planning for next year. We are anticipating the same level of success too, people are trying to renew their booth spots and we are already getting lots of speaker suggestions!”
