B.C. and Yukon turn focus to food security in the north

The northern B.C. and Yukon governments are partnering to build food security by increasing the supply and production of local food, according to the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture.

The governments are collaborating with the agricultural sector to share expertise specific to food production and farm management in the northern region.

Discussion topics will include temperature limitations, length of seasons, and business relationships among farmers, food processors, and agricultural service suppliers.

“Working together is key to life in Canada’s north, and the partnership between farmers, Indigenous communities, experts and governments will help increase local food production and economic activity,” said Lana Popham, B.C.’s Minister of Agriculture.

The Ministry explained this will be a way to break agricultural trade barriers between northern communities and increase Indigenous involvement in sustainable food production.

“Our co-operative efforts will encourage greater involvement and awareness of local food, and help more people in Yukon and northern B.C. enjoy the flavours and benefits of products from their communities,” she said.

Partnership targets include expanding local food and beverage production through a networking forum created for those in food production and partnering with academic institutions to help growers commercialize produce.

The strategies are described in further detail in a memorandum of understanding.
