As Prince George faces bitterly cold temperatures, citizens are left reaching for their winter jackets.
When temperatures drop well below zero, special considerations need to be made in order to keep warm and avoid potential cold-weather health risks.
Jacob Mullen, manager at Ruckus Ski Boards and Bikes Ltd in Prince George, recommends layering clothing for ideal temperature moderation and breathability.
“In weather like this, you don’t want to be getting hot and sweaty and then step out. That can cause hypothermia quite quickly,” he explained.
Mullen added that although layering is important, using the right types of layers is also a factor.
“More specialized winter gear like wool, base layers, and thicker down jackets are meant to insulate you more and stop wind… even when wool is soaking wet, it is going to keep you well insulated… rather than just a hoodie that gets wet and turns you into a popsicle.”
The ideal winter layers include a synthetic fabric to wick away moisture, a layer to insulate, and an outer layer or shell that blocks wind, rain and other elements.
Proper winter clothing remains important, even for those who don’t intend to spend a lot of time outdoors.
“You never know when your vehicle is going to break down or something like that,” said Mullen.
