The ‘polar bear’ dip is a time-honored Canadian tradition used for everything from ringing in the new year to hangover cures.
Ness Lake Bible Camp (NLBC) is hosting its 19th annual one as a fundraiser to send kids to camp.
This year those from the Ron Brent community can go for free, last year it was Harwin.
“If you’re from the lower mainland the dip is just another walk in the park,” explained NLBC Operations Director Dave Horton.
“You go down where there’s no snow to a body of water that isn’t frozen, and go for a leisurely dip, In Prince George, it’s a lot more serious than that.”
They cut through twelve inches of ice, and then a quick jump in and then out of the lake.
The camp is hoping this year will be one for the books – they hope to break $10,000 in donations and see at least 100 participants.
Last year the fundraiser reached $8,000.
The Polar Bear dip is January 1st (Wednesday) at 2:30 pm, but interested participants are advised to check-in at 2.
