Winter holidays may come with unique fire safety concerns

Those looking to keep seasonal festivities safe may want to take a few extra steps according to Chief Fire Prevention Officer, Steve Sweeney.

“Fire safety is always important, but with decorations, candles, lots of cooking, space heaters and wood stoves burning, it becomes more important”.

Residents are urged to never leave cooking food or candles unattended, while Sweeney also warned that: “some of our most common fires are from chimneys that haven’t been inspected and cleaned properly.”

Additionally, those decorating for the holidays are encouraged to try and purchase fire-resistant Christmas decorations, utilize certified indoor Christmas lights, keep real Christmas trees watered, and avoid overloading extension cords.

Sweeney also emphasized the importance of every household maintaining a functional, tested, and cleaned fire alarm system as well as a carbon monoxide detector and fire extinguisher.
