Christmas comes early for local family thanks to Facebook group

A local family took to Facebook to thank its good samaritan.

UNBC Student and single mother of 5, Heather Holland, responded to a thread she saw on Facebook, asking its members what they need most during the holidays.

In the case of Holland, she needed groceries but she didn’t expect her comment to be answered.

She received a message from a woman asking for her address, and a list of what she needed.

“Within an hour, she came by and dropped off the food. It was quite a bit of food,” said Holland.

“When I was putting my groceries away I teared up because getting help like that, in such a kind gesture from someone I didn’t even know, it just meant a lot, and my kids were really happy about that.”

Holland explained it has been a difficult time for her these last few months, due to the UNBC strike, and balancing the holiday with her son’s birthday, which is also on Christmas.

“Another way I wanted to thank the lady that helped me was to put a post on Hell Yeah Prince George, hoping it would find her.” she said “It did very quickly! I think there are over 1,400 likes on there now. My phone kept going off with the notifications!”

Holland believes the group is a great way to build community in an unorthodox but effective way.
