Voter numbers up for Cariboo-PG but percentages down

More people actually showed up to vote this year in the Cariboo-Prince George riding, but the percentage is down because of a higher population of eligible voters in the region.

Four years ago,  there were 79, 517 eligible voters in Cariboo-Prince George and 53, 950 of those people voted, representing 67.8% of voters. 

In this year’s election, 176 more voters came out (54, 126) but the percentage comes out lower, at 64.35%, because there are 4599 more eligible voters in the riding from 2015. 

For the Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies riding, the eligible voting population went up by 3,085 people. For this year, 68% (54, 597) of 79,397 voters exercised that right and in 2015, 52, 056 (66.5%) voters out of the 76, 312 eligible cast a ballot.  

“In individual ridings and polls it can be based on a great variety of things, so really what we look at is long term trends,” said Marantz on how Elections Canada assesses the information.   

Provincially, BC saw a 65% turnout compared to a 68% turnout in 2015.
