The Prince George Cougars’ 16-year-old goaltender Tyler Brennan has been selected as one of six goalies named to Hockey Canada’s roster for the upcoming 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
Brennan will be among the 66 players selected to dawn the maple leaf at the tournament that runs from Nov. 2-9 in Medicine Hat, AB, and Swift Current, SK.
The three Canadian teams — Team Canada Black, Team Canada Red, and Team Canada White — will compete against the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden, and the United States.
The Winnipeg, MB product has appeared in a pair of games this season for the Cougars and he picked up his first Western Hockey League (WHL) win, in his first career WHL start on October 5th against the Kelowna Rockets. In two games this season, Brennan has a 1.11 goals-against average (GAA) and sports a .950 save percentage (SV%).
Last season, Brennan, the Cougars’ second pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, played for the Winnipeg-based Rink Hockey Academy (RHA) in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League. The 6’3, 185-pound netminder also played at the Canada Winter Games in February, as he appeared in four games with Team Manitoba.
The Cougars will be represented behind the bench as well. Director of Player Development, Steve O’Rourke, will serve as an Assistant Coach for Team Canada Red, and Equipment Manager Ramandeep (Chico) Dhanjal will serve behind the bench for Team Canada Black.
After spending time on the injured list with an upper-body injury, Brennan will be available this weekend for the Cougars when they play host to the Spokane Chiefs.
