RCMP say suspects showed no remorse in video confession to Northern BC murders

As promised, the RCMP has provided the public with an overview of their investigation regarding the murders of three individuals in Northern BC back in July.

During the announcement by Kevin Hackett, the Assistant Commissioner and Criminal Operations Officer in charge if Federal, Investigate Services and Organized Crime in British Columbia, he stated that the RCMP have discovered that two suspects confessed to the murders of three people in several videos taken before they shot themselves.

The Mounties say 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod, who was 19, expressed no remorse in the videos and did not explain their motives behind the killings that sparked a nationwide manhunt this summer. Before their deaths, the men were charged with the murder of a University of British Columbia professor, and were also suspects in the deaths of an American woman and her Australian boyfriend.

According to the RCMP, they believe at this point that McLeod and Schmegelsky came across Lucas Fowler’s van and targeted Lucas Fowler and his girlfriend, Chynna Deese. They then shot and killed the couple before continuing to Yukon. The two returned to BC days later because of vehicle issues and came across Leonard Dyck outside of Dease Lake. They then shot and killed Dyck.

It was at this time that the RCMP believe they burned their vehicle as a way to cover up the evidence before stealing Dyck’s vehicle.

Once they reached Manitoba, they again burned the vehicle and attempted to continue on foot. It is believed that McLeod shot Schmegelsky before shooting himself.

The RCMP found two rifles with the deceased suspects. These rifles were examined by the firearms lab and were determined to be the same weapons used in the Fort Nelson and Dease Lake homicides.

A digital camera belonging to Dyck was also discovered. The police state that the camera contained six videos and three still images. In t he videos, the suspects took responsibility for all three murders. They indicated no remorse for their actions and their intentions to potentially kill others. They also described their intent to commit suicide and their wish to be cremated.

The RCMP state that they will not be releasing the video to the public.
