SPCA seeks donations to answer high demand for food bank

Approximately 300 cats in Prince George rely on the pet food bank.

It’s a lot, and so much that the SPCA is finding it difficult to keep their food bank stocked well enough to provide adequate amounts of food to those felines in need.

However, today (Saturday), the SPCA is brought themselves to the centre of the weekend’s festivities for those who may be interested in assisting them.

With the final year’s instalment of the Crossroad’s Street Festival going on in Downtown Prince George, Hand Over Head Axe Throwing invited the SPCA to share their tent at the event as a way to assist with donations.

“We don’t have access to this number of people very often,” said SPCA’s Alyssa Stauble. “Our shelter is rundown and it’s kind of in an out of the way location, so to be able to represent the SPCA in a high-density location is a big deal for us.”

The SPCA recently started their pet food bank in collaboration with the Salvation Army. Stauble said they had no idea just how much support was needed in the community. However, the level of donations is substantially higher for dog food compared to the number of cats that are seeking assistance through the food bank.

While the food bank is in collaboration with the Salvation Army, Stauble says donations should be brought to the SPCA as they then portion it all out before distributing the food to those on the program. The SPCA is hoping that with the more central location at the Crossroad’s Street Festival will bring in more donations to help.

“These cats really need us, so if you’re able to bring a bag to help us, or provide a donation, it’ll be great to see everyone’s faces and help out our community. These are cats in our community and if there’s anything I know about Prince George, I know we come together in times of need.”

The Crossroad’s Street Festival is on today (Saturday) until 3 p.m.

If you’re unable to make it down today, donations are always welcome at the North Cariboo SCPA, located at 4011 Lansdowne Road in Prince George.
