The Prince George Spruce Kings officially clinched a playoff spot following a 2-1 victory over the last place Surrey Eagles. AP call up Trevor Pereverzoff notched the winner at 7:43 of the third to snap a 1-1 tie. It was his first BCHL goal. PG outshot Surrey 41-28 before 814 fans. The same teams meet again tonight at the Coliseum as the Spruce Kings conclude a five game home-stand. Prince George (21-19-0-4) is third in the Mainland Division, six points behind Chilliwack and seven back of Langley.

–The Prince George Cougars leading scorer, Jansen Harkins, was part of the Team Orr 6-0 victory over Team Cherry in the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in St. Catharines, Ontario. Harkins, who wore an A, finished plus one with no points.

–Prince George Cougars captain Sam Ruopp has been suspended five games by the WHL for a knee on knee hit Tuesday against Everett. Ruopp was given a five minute kneeing major and a game misconduct for the infraction. It is his second knee major and game misconduct this season. He sat out Wednesday’s rematch against Everett that was won the Silvertips 4-1. He will also miss road games against Medicine Hat tonight, Lethbridge Saturday and Kootenay Sunday plus a home game against Seattle on January 30th.

–The 25-4-1 Major Midget leading Cariboo Cougars visit the  14-8-6  Valley West Hawks  Saturday and Sunday in Richmond.

–Patti Knezevic of Prince George whipped Kelly Scott of Kelowna 8-3 to improve her record to 2-0 at the Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship in Maple Ridge. Knezevic (who won her opener 8-3  over Diane Gushaluk of Vancouver) advances to the A event final against Sarah Wark of Victoria today. The winner will be the top seed for the page playoff. Eight teams are competing with the final Sunday at 1pm. The BC champion advances to the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts Feb 14-22 in Moose Jaw.

–The UNBC Timberwolves play Canada West basketball games tonight and Saturday in Calgary against Mount Royal. Next home action for the Twolves goes Jan 30th-31st against MacEwan. The  5-7 UNBC men are a game out of a playoff spot in the Explorer Division while the Lady Twolves are out of contention at 1-11. Mount Royal is 6-6 (men) and 4-8 (women).

–The 28th annual PG ICEMAN will take place on Sunday, however, one leg of the race has been canceled. The Ice Oval has been eliminated from use, thus dropping the skating portion of the event. It’s believed the ice is not in good enough condition due to the warm weather, and would impact Canada Winter Games events. Over 400 participants are expected to compete in the ICEMAN that will feature running, skiing and swimming events.
