PG resident honoured for tackling invasive plants

A Prince George resident has been honoured for her work in fighting invasive plants that have infiltrated our ecosystems.

Andrea Eastham has won the “Together in Action Individual Award” for her volunteer work to reduce invasive plants.

“I love what I do and I have fun doing it,” she says. “It just seems inconceivable that someone would get an award just for having fun.”

She says there aren’t any dangerous invasive plants in Northern BC lakes … yet.

“But we do have a lot of serious damage that’s been done by invasive plants, particularly ones that grow in Hyperion areas,” she says. “Some of the species that we concern ourselves with are: Japanese Knotweed, Common Tansy, Spotted Knapweed, we’re always on a seek and destroy mission for other species.”

Director for the Invasive Species Council of BC Gail Wallin speaks to some of Eastham’s work.

“She’s volunteered her hours with organizations and provide education to schools on horticulture , to gardeners on what they should be planting instead of invasive plants,” she says.

The “Together in Action” awards honours businesses, individuals, and organizations for leadership in fighting invasive plants.

Other winners include Gardenworks in Burnaby, the Nuxalk Nation near Bella Coola, and the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort in Kelowna.
