Public awareness campaign hoping to curb tobacco use

This week is National non-smoking week, and the Canadian Cancer Society is renewing its efforts to reduce the number of smoking related cancer deaths.

BC currently has Canadas lowest tobacco usage rates, sitting at around 13%. However, the Cancer Society is wanting to drop that number down to 9%, and is mainly looking to address flavoured tobacco usage among youth.

Kathryn Seely is Public Issues Director with the society, and spoke about their new public awareness campaign and the latest Youtube video:

“…which shows the doctor and the nurses in an operating room pulling a piece of strawberry from a persons lungs with the tagline cancer now available in strawberry so we are letting people know that cancer can now come in candy or fruit flavoured tobacco products just to let people know, and its a serious subject I know that its not a laughing matter – but that these products which are flavoured are still cancer causing”

Smoking remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in BC, and to help reduce the risk the Cancer society wants to increase tobacco taxes and make parks, playgrounds and restaurants smoke free, while also banning the sale of e-cigarettes to minors.
