Prince George elementary school teacher takes home Todd Rogers Research Award

Harwin Elementary School in Prince George is now home to a national award-winning teacher.

Trina Chivilo teaches music at the K-7 level and was given the Todd Rogers Research Award by the Canadian Education Researcher’s Association during the final School District 57 board meeting of the 2018-19 academic year on Tuesday.

Chivilo further explained to MYPGNOW.com what her award is all about.

“It’s mostly about public school educators who are creating networks of inquiry in and around their school and school districts amongst their communities of colleagues.”

She also sits on the Pro-D committee as well as the Pacific Slope Educational Consortium, which is made of a group of teachers.

“We have a symposium in Barkerville every two years and because I am a music teacher now, most of my contributions for that symposium is all about sound education.”

“I am a music teacher. I teach it from K to 7 in an elementary school and that is an unusual thing as a lot of music programs don’t exist in the same way.”

As for how she was selected, the CERA goes through a specific process depending on the location of their meeting each and every year.

“They have an annual conference every year and whatever their conference is in they make sure there are two teachers who are observed and recognized for their work.”

Chivilo was unable to attend the award ceremony at UBC in Vancouver, which was held earlier this month.
