Due to overcapacity at Duchess Park, the Catchment and Capacity Advisory Committee is recommending moving students from Edgewood and Spruceland elementary schools out of the area.
The recommendation is to move the grade 7 students leaving Spruceland and Edgewood to D.P. Todd Secondary.
SD57 Board Chair Tim Bennet says this is part of a list of recommendations proposed earlier this year to address the overcapacity.
“Right now we are over 200 students over capacity, our staff at Duchess Park is doing a great job making sure everyone is still getting quality programming, but we need to do something to address it.”
The proposed changes are set to go into effect for the September 2020 school year.
Public information sessions regarding the recommended changes will be held at 7 p.m. next Tuesday (June 11) at Edgewood Elementary and 7 p.m. on Wednesday (June 12) at Spruceland Elementary.
D.P. Todd is currently under capacity by 40 students, but discussions will be held with the Ministry of Education to determine the feasibility of renovating the school to accommodate an additional 300 seats. In the short term, SD57 said portables would be considered as a temporary solution.
