Construction to begin on Prince George Public Library next week

This week, crews are mobilizing and preparing the front of the Prince George Public Library for construction. (supplied by City of PG)

Work on the new entrance to the Bob Harkins Branch of the Prince George Public Library is slated to begin next week.

The project will involve the installation of a two-and-a-half storey addition to the north side of the Library and a new circulation area.

Starting today, residents and library visitors will have to rely on the parking-level entrance to access the library. Construction will also require the partial closure of one of the traffic lanes on a section of Canada Games Way in front of the library, and complete closure of both lanes will be required periodically during the course of construction.

The construction will be operated by an all PG line-up, including Chernoff Thompson Architects North and Datoff Bros. Construction.

According to a release from the city, since its construction in 1981, the library has faced challenges with the main entrance open-air stairway. The current entrances pose a challenge for many, including young families, people with disabilities, seniors, and staff.

Project features:

  • An elevator with access from both sides providing access from the parking area, plaza level, main floor, and second floor.
  • Improved stairs for access from the main lobby to the second floor.
  • Windows to maximize natural light and an open atmosphere.
  • All entries will be accessible through sliding glass or push button access.
  • Enhanced accessible parking and drop off zone at parking level.

The operation is expected to be completed and opened to the public by the spring of 2020.
