Council approves $2-million parkade budget increase

The 2nd Ave Parkade upgrade budget has nearly doubled in the three years since council initially approved the project.

At Monday night council meeting, councilors voted to approve an increase from $2.7-million to $5.16-million but not all were on board with the decision.

Councilor Brian Skakun along with Councilor Frank Everitt, voted against the increase.

“The original budget was $2.5-million. It went over $5-million what we were saying is it’s not sustainable. When we have a budget item we vote on, it should be coming in close to that budget.”

Councilor Terri McConnachie said no one likes paying more money but it’s a necessary expense.

“We had a decision to make. Do we take this after 44 years of neglect and just kick the can further down the road or do we just realize it’s time to address these infrastructure issues.”

She said things like concrete and other materials are just increasing each year so the cost is not going to drop.

“We realize it will not get cheaper, and it will not go away,” said McConnachie.
