Prince George City staff say most people don’t realize that most facilities accept a significant portion of their illegally dumped items free of change.
At the Prince George City Council meeting on Monday night, councilors were briefed by staff on the issue the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George faces with residents illegally disposing of waste.
Councilor Brian Skakun said the issue is that it is so tough to enforce.
“I think we need to increase enforcement and monitoring. Hopefully, with the Regional District, the City, and the Spruce City Wildlife Association, possibly working together going forward there will be improvements.”
The Regional District has three landfills and 17 transfer stations people can use to dispose of garbage. There are also several cleanups throughout the year, allowing people to drop off things for free.
According to the City last year they cleaned up four tonnes of waste that people had illegally dumped or was left behind from homeless camps.
“It’s probably easier to bring them to a recycling place than take the time to go drive into the bush to do it,” Skakun said.
