Fundraising campaign kicks off with unveiling of Botanical Garden sign

Drivers along University Way in Prince George might notice a new roadside view.

UNBC and the David Douglas Botanical Society cut the ropes and unveiled the Expansion to the Botanical Sign as the group kicks off their fundraising campaign.

“It’s our big step in going public,” DDBGS President Linda Naess told MyPGNow. “What begins now is even more hard work. We have to start the fundraising because it’s going to be a lot of money. That’s the big part, particularly to build the building so we have a home on campus.”

The 23 acres that’s being used for the Botanical Garden was actually handed over to DDBGS by UNBC.

“It’s huge for a university to do that. A lot of times there are gardens that are donated to universities, but for the university to be in partnership with a society to do this is incredible,” said Naess.

“It’s going to be the most northerly Botanical Garden in Canada.”

It’ll be more than just a garden. As Naess states, it’ll provide both an educational and research component to it, which could very well influence the university to develop a botany department in the not too distant future.

Naess is optimistic it will also lead to a lot of research grants in the future as well.

When the tarp was pulled off of the sign, Naess said it become a reality.

“Today was kind of a catch in my throat because it’s real, this is real. As Dr. Weeks (UNBC President) said, there’s no backing out now.”
