The Northern Attachment Network was collecting bears today.
At their annual Lighting the Way conference at UNBC, the network honoured Jordan River Anderson, the subject of Jordan’s Principle.
Jordan’s Principle is a child first principle and legal rule named in memory of Jordan River Anderson. It ensures First Nations children receive the services and supports they need when they need them.
Anderson was born in 1999 with multiple disabilities and stayed in the hospital from birth.
When he was 2 years old, doctors said he could move to a special home for his medical needs. However, the federal and provincial governments could not agree on who should pay for his home-based care.
He stayed in the hospital until he passed away at the age of 5.
“This little guy never got to be at home. That sparked an inquiry and in the end started Jordon’s Principle which means a First Nation’s child will receive healthcare regardless, without any delays, regardless of who’s paying,” said Jenny Plouffe, Co-chair of the Northern Attachment Network Advisory.
The spirit bears are a symbol of Jordon’s Principle and were given to the early childhood class at CNC Early Childhood Care to be distributed to local charities.
Over 300 delegates attended the event.
