Evacuation Reception Centre being set up at CNC

UPDATE:

The College of New Caledonia (CNC) says they’ve registered 150 evacuees from the Cariboo as of 9PM Saturday night.

The college gym will have cots, emergency supplies, and medical gear for those who need it most.

Highway 97 is now open Northbound from Clinton all the way to Prince George, while southbound remains closed between Quesnel and Williams Lake.

Prince George is gearing up to host people being evacuated due to the wildfires throughout the Cariboo.

The City’s Director of External Relations Rob Van Adrichem says that CNC is being set up as an emergency reception centre and the City’s Emergency Operations Centre has been activated.

Von Adrichem says accommodations will be available in CNC’s gym and the parking lot is being cleared for RVs and trailers. There will also be emergency food and medical services available.

“Prince George is responding and preparing to help our neighbours from the Cariboo,” says Mayor Lyn Hall.

“Residents of Prince George who want to help can simply help to direct visitors who have been evacuated to the emergency reception centre at CNC. The reception centre itself does not need donations from residents at this time.”

For those with animals or livestock, the Agriplex is providing boarding space.

Highway 97 is now open to northbound traffic from 100 Mile through to Prince George. The southbound lanes remain closed.

The City is planning to issue an update on Sunday, July 9.
