The Provincial government has deemed October “Library Month” and the Prince George Public Library is celebrating.
As well as its regular service, spokesperson Amy Dhanjal says there are programs throughout the month like toddler talks for parents, teen yoga, and homework help for you to learn and interact with the community.
“Libraries are about learning at their core and sharing information but they’re also about connection and connecting different community members.”
The government calculated that the total library visits, both in person and online, have more than double since 2004. In 2015, British Columbians used libraries’ free wifi 4.5 million times, up 42% from the year prior. Dhanjal has seen the library’s usage grow locally and notes that millennials are actually the library’s biggest users, whether it’s to take out a book, jump on the internet, or participate in a program.
“I think there’s a real interest in learning from community experts who are bringing their interest and knowledge so that’s one of the resources we leverage with our programs.”
The Province says 38.6% of British Columbians have an active library card. Dhanjal predicts Prince George and the District will have about 51,000 active card users by the end of the year.
