A couple of standardized tests for elementary school students are frustrating the BC Teachers Federation.
The BCTF believes the foundation skills assessments, which are completed in grades 4 and 7, are not helping students learn or improving teacher abilities.
They also believe the results of these tests are misused by private organizations and used to rank community schools.
Tina Cousins is with the Prince George District Teachers association and echoed those concerns:
Â
“The concern is why don’t we do a random sample? There are other ways to get that information that doesn’t need to take up the amount of time this test takes, as well, its very costly”
The BCTF believes a test should not be allowed to pit schools against each other, and says the rankings often skew results and do more to cause unnecessary stress on students.
They also say they are currently working on an alternative assessment method.
Something going on in the Prince George area you think people should know about?
